NFL Free
Pick | Chargers @ Dolphins
Two rookie
quarterbacks will meet for the first of what is hopefully many times over their
NFL careers when the Chargers Justin Herbert takes on Miami’s Tua Tagovailoa on
Sunday.
Both
quarterbacks have been experiencing some success and both will play a huge role
in Sunday’s outcome. They also lead us into this NFL free pick.

Where’s
the D?
If the
Chargers could figure out how to play some defense - they have given up 31.8
points per game over their last five - they would be at least .500 and maybe
even a game over.
The L.A.
offense isn’t the problem. The Chargers are second in the NFL in total offense
averaging over 420 yards per game. Over their past five games, Herbert has led
the Chargers to an average of over 31 points a game.

In each of
their last two games, the Chargers have lost on the game’s final possession.
L.A. had a first-and-goal at the Raiders four-yard line last week but couldn’t
convert. The week before, Denver scored on the game’s final play.

Possible
ROY?
Herbert has
been outstanding, especially in the last five games. He has thrown 15 touchdown
passes and just three interceptions. The big thing to note about Herbert and
the Chargers is that in each of those last five games, the Total has gone Over.

Week 9 by the numbers.
Looking at
the Dolphins, they are much improved after starting the season 1-3. They have
won four straight games and the offense has really kicked it up over the last
seven games averaging 30.8 points per game.
Last week,
Tagovailoa started his second game and was much more effective than his first.
He finished 20-of-28 for 248 yards and two touchdowns as the Dolphins beat
Arizona 34-31. Against a defense as suspect as the Chargers, there is no reason
why Tagovailoa cannot continue to have success come Sunday.

You can
probably see where this pick is headed, but for more analysis consider the
following. The Chargers are one of the faster-paced offenses in the NFL running
a play about every 26 seconds. The result is that L.A. runs 72.4 plays per
game. That is second among NFL teams.
Not only
has the Over gone 5-0 in the Chargers last five games, not only are they second
in total offense and second in number of plays run per game; the Chargers lean
toward the Over when they are on the road.
Since 2003,
the Over is 75-62-3 in games where the Chargers have played on the road. That’s
a winning percentage of 55 percent. With two rookie quarterbacks looking to
outduel each other possibly with the NFL Rookie of the Year on the line, that
total of 48 looks like it will be surpassed.
