MLB Futures Betting, What to Look For
Futures betting is becoming more and more popular with
trends in Major League Baseball becoming more and more apparent. Like the NBA,
the top teams are much better than the rest, with the bottom-feeders well under
.500.
While this article is based more around general ideas of
what to look for, some of the theories will be based around the landscape of
the current MLB. Right now, top
online sportsbooks have the Houston Astros as the favorite to win the World
Series at +410. A close second and third are the Red Sox (+465) and Yankees
(+535), with some distance between the 4th place Dodgers (+850) with
the Cubs (+950) rounding out the top five.

Recent history has to be the largest contributing factor,
because this encompasses so many things. Current record, place in the standings
and run differential are three main contributors. However, also included in
recent history is an organization’s aggressiveness at the trade deadline.
With around 60 games left on each team’s schedule, some very
strong trends will make narrowing down your decision an easy one. Boston, at 71
wins (July 24), has 6 more than the Astros, who have the second most wins in
the American League. The top win producer in the National League are the Cubs
with 58, although they have 3 games in hand.
Trade deadline history may even have more to do with it.
Last year, Astros GM Jeff Luhnow pulled off perhaps the trade of the year
acquiring pitcher Justin Verlander from the Tigers for three prospects at the
eleventh hour. This season, Verlander and co. are the majors best starting
rotation, to go along with a stacked lineup helping them be the favorite to win
and repeat.
The biggest problem with the Astros this season has been the
bullpen, with closer Ken Giles being sent down to the minors to “work on his
stuff” and others imploding at the same time. You have to figure with a healthy
farm system, Luhnow will be pulling a few more strings to land some help for
the pen.
Theo Epstein is known as an aggressive General Manager,
making the huge move to get closer Aroldis Chapman to help the Cubs finally
break the curse, winning it all in ’16. This isn’t even taking into account
some big spenders named the BoSox and Yanks, with the Indians also known for
making a few moves of their own.

Not everyone is a big enough sports fan to follow GM’s and
their styles, but it’s information you really need to know before placing a
futures bet. The Dodgers may have already made the trade of 2018, getting Manny
Machado to play over on the left side of the infield. He’s already started at 3rd
after Justin Turner was placed on the DL, with Dodger manager Dave Roberts
saying Manny “will do whatever helps the team”.
How a team finishes a season plays a big part of well. Look
at a team like the Brewers. Last season they faded down the stretch, eventually
becoming a non-factor in the playoff schedule. I know what you’re saying, the
Brewers went out and got a lot better in the off-season, getting Yelich, Cain,
etc, but the Brewers are already showing some wear-and-tear losing six in a row
and 8 of their last ten before the All-Star break. This is a classic team to
avoid.

Baseball Betting – Second Half, Who Delivers, Who Falls Off?
There’s so much to take into consideration when placing a
futures bet like the World Series winner. The human factor alone will create
events not even dreamed possible, but by taking these ideas I’ve outlined into
consideration, you’ll be better educated and in turn will be minimizing your
risk. Go visit your online sportsbook right now and take a look at which team
provides the most value, the crystal ball should be a little clearer.
